What began as a one-truck operation has evolved into a thriving transport business powered by a fleet of more than 20 DAF trucks. Starting a transport business is never easy. Long hours, financial pressure, securing customers and contracts, managing fuel costs, maintenance expenses and administration all come with the territory. For many operators, building a successful transport and logistics business takes years of determination, resilience and hard work.
From One Truck to a Leading Transport Business
Hakam Gill's journey began after working in the transport industry in New Zealand. When he arrived in Australia, he launched Gagan Warehousing and Transport in Melbourne with just one tray truck and a clear vision for growth.
“I started Gagan Warehousing and Transport back in 2005 in Melbourne after my background was working in transport in Auckland,” says Hakam.
“When I arrived from New Zealand and started the business in Australia, I had only the one small tray truck. I started by delivering timber to construction sites.”
Like many successful transport operators, Hakam recognised early that growth required strategic investment. Within two years, the business had expanded into the general freight transport sector with tautliner trucks. By the end of 2007, Gagan Warehousing and Transport had grown to almost 10 trucks.
“After years of running general freight and timber for construction sites, I decided to start the crane truck hire side of the business,” says Hakam.
“That has since made work easier for the company compared to solely unloading steel and timber off our trucks. We now provide crane truck hire services for major warehousing brands like Bunnings and Mitre 10, while also continuing store-to-store and residential deliveries.”
Why DAF Trucks Became the Preferred Choice
Gagan Warehousing and Transport added its first DAF truck in 2021, purchasing a DAF XF 530 from Hallam Truck Centre.
“I bought my first DAF truck in 2021. It was my first prime mover, and I bought it from Muza,” says Hakam.
“It was a DAF XF 530hp that I ordered in March 2021. I liked it so much that in the same year I bought another DAF model in the LF 290hp with a flat tray and crane on the back.”
Hakam quickly expanded the fleet with additional DAF models, including LF 290 crane trucks. As Gagan Warehousing and Transport continued to grow, crane trucks and tray trucks became an increasingly important part of the operation, making DAF the natural choice for future fleet expansion.
“With these new trucks coming, I will have 22 DAF trucks in my fleet,” says Hakam.

Today, the company's fleet includes:
- DAF XG 660hp
- DAF XF 530hp
- DAF CF twin steer and rigid configurations
- DAF LF 290hp crane and tray trucks
“I’ve bought all the models. I have LF trucks, CF models in twin steer and prime mover options, three XF models rated at 530hp and I’ve now bought one XG 660hp.”
“I’ve also bought three LF 290 models. My DAF trucks are mostly rigid trucks with cranes on them. Nearly all the trucks I’ve bought in recent years have been through DAF and Hallam Truck Centre.”

“I like DAF trucks because they’re very quiet and fuel-wise they’re good. I love driving them,” says Hakam.
“The XF and XG models are my favourites because they’re comfortable and fuel-efficient. Overall, buying DAFs has allowed me to grow my business into being one of the largest building material suppliers in south-east Australia’s residential and building materials sector.”

“He’s the best person to deliver trucks to, and whenever he visits us at Hallam Truck Centre, he brings an incredible positivity to the room,” says Muza.
“He’s very good at what he does, and he’s done a wonderful job expanding the business. He’s loved by all of us because he always has a smile on his face.”
